Washington Horse Racing

Washington Horse Racing

The horse racing industry in the state of Washington has changed significantly in recent years. The state fairs, once a booming and popular pastime, have begun to dwindle down and now there is only one fair meet that remains. The state is home to one main track – Emerald Downs, which was built to replace Longacres.

Washington Race Tracks

Emerald Downs

Located in Auburn, Emerald Downs opened in 1996 and replaced Longacres Racetrack which had closed in 1992. The track is a one-mile oval and they do not have a turf course. Live racing season begins in April and the track runs through the middle of September and racing is typically conducted Friday through Sunday each week. In 2016, Emerald Downs will celebrate their 20th anniversary with festivities scheduled for June 20. Their premier racing event is the Longacres Mile which is a Grade 3 event and offers a purse of $200,000. The Longacres Mile is held in the middle of August each summer.

Sun Downs

Located on the other side of the state in Kennewick, Sun Downs is scheduled to race for six days in 2016 and the abbreviated meet will run from April 23 to May 8. Sun Downs splits their racing between Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.
