Track History & Facts
Sunland Park Racetrack was founded in 1959 and was developed out into a full entertainment destination. Like so many horse racing tracks around the United States, the Sunland Park Racetrack evolved from offering just horse racing into offering exciting casino action as well. The addition of casino games (slot machines) has helped increase the purses offered at horse racing tracks around the country and it has helped many horse racing venues stay operational.
In 2009, a former Sunland Park horse, Mine That Bird, shocked the horse racing world by winning the Kentucky Derby at odds of 50-1, and each year Sunland hosts the Mine That Bird Derby in his honor. More recently, Governor Charlie won the 2013 Sunland Derby, before finishing eighth in the Preakness Stakes. In 2014, Sunland Derby winner Chitu went on to finish ninth in the Kentucky Derby.
