Maine Horse Racing

Maine Horse Racing

Bolstered by expanding gaming in the state, harness racing is thriving in Maine. While there are no live Thoroughbred race meets held in Maine, there are two main Standardbred tracks which feature harness racing as well as several fairs held throughout the summer and fall.

Maine Race Tracks

Scarborough Downs

Scarborough Downs opened in 1950 and was originally designed to host Thoroughbred racing. The track became the first Thoroughbred track in the country to offer night racing once they installed lights during their initial season. With such a strong support for harness racing in the state, the track switched exclusively to harness racing in the 1970s and has hosted Standardbreds since then.

Bangor Raceway

Operated by Hollywood Casino, Bangor Raceway features live harness racing from May through November. The track is located in Bangor, Maine and has been the host to harness racing for over 100 years. The track was a marquee attraction in the 1890s and has undergone many makeovers since its inception. In 2010, thanks to gaming revenue, the track was able to revamp the barn areas and improve the overall performance.
