Maryland is credited with that honor, having formed the Maryland Jockey Club in 1743 (it remains the longest-standing sports association in the U.S.). Belair Stable in Prince George's County is recognized as the "cradle of American racing" and was the birthplace of Gallant Fox and Omaha, the only father-and-son horses to win the Triple Crown.

Maryland is also the home of the second jewel in that crown, the Preakness Stakes, named after the horse that won the inagural race at Pimlico in 1870. Located in northwest Baltimore, Pimlico Race Course is 1-3/16 miles of track on which champions such as Affirmed, Alydar and Seattle Slew forged their legacies. Laurel Park, home to the Maryland Million, is another magical place where the likes of Barbaro, Secretariat, Spectacular Bid and War Admiral ran to glory. Ocean Downs in Berlin is a locus of standardbred harness racing along with Rosecroft in Fort Washington, which is known as the "Raceway By the Beltway."
