Woodbine Mile 2023: War Bomber can fly under the radar

The Woodbine Mile on Saturday, September 16 at Woodbine racetrack is one of the most important horse race betting events of the year! Every year, the race draws the leading turf milers from North America, and often major horses from overseas as well. The spoils are rich: not only a $1 million purse, but also an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile for the winner.

The race is one of the most important events on the Breeders’ Cup calendar. Five times in the last 12 years, horses have swept the Woodbine Mile - Breeders’ Cup Mile double: Court Vision (2011), Wise Dan (2012, 2013), World Approval (2017), and Modern Games (2022). 2016 winner Tepin had also won the Breeders’ Cup Mile the previous year, and ran second in her defense.

Woodbine Mile Best Bet

In a field of just six, tactical speed can be the recipe for carving out the right trip. And, a horse who should be a value price has an excellent shot of carving out a perfect trip in the Woodbine Mile: War Bomber.

He comes into the race off of a stalk-and-pounce victory in the local prep, the King Edward (G2). And, though this is a classier field, he is in good enough form to fit. He also stalked and pounced into a sharp pace last out, important since rabbit My Sea Cottage leaves him tracking a pace that will not be slow. Bet that this Woodbine-loving stalker can pounce and hold off the cavalry.

Woodbine Mile Exotics Horses

Master of the Seas is the likely favorite in the Mile, given both his back class and his trainer: Charlie Appleby, one of the world’s most adept shippers. He likely won’t get the jump on War Bomber, though he is versatile enough not to be left completely at the back of the field. He should be in strong form, though, and should be well suited to this race.

Ice Chocolat is the best of the three-deep Mark Casse brigade. Coming off a solid third behind New York star Casa Creed shows that he is in good form. The question is pace; he does have a rabbit in there, but he will also have to catch some good horses who are in very good form. Especially at a short price, he isn’t an exciting win bet but he makes strong sense for exotics.

Among the rest, the value is betting that the rabbit My Sea Cottage holds on for a piece of the trifecta. As the likely pacesetter he has the jump, and last time he wasn’t a bad fourth in the Fourstardave (G1) in what was a huge class jump. With the pace advantage, he is more appealing than either deep closer Lucky Score, or Shirl’s Speight, a likely well-bet horse who is better at a two-turn mile than a one-turn mile.
