Belmont Derby Favorites

Stone Age fits a similar profile as winner Bolshoi Ballet did last year. He is trained by Aidan O’Brien, and he ran a great race before the English Derby (G1) before faltering in the Classic. He should love the turn back to ten furlongs. However, he will be a short price and he still needs to prove he can win without the early lead since he faces sharper American speed in this.

Nations Pride is the more interesting of the European shippers. He found the English Derby too much, too soon after an impressive score in the Newmarket on April 29. But, he has proven that he has tactical speed, he has shined at a mile and a quarter, and trainer Charlie Appleby has been excellent with American shippers over the last year.

Emmanuel will probably be most enthusiastically bet among the American horses. He shined first-time turf in the Pennine Ridge (G2), the local prep. Though trainer Todd Pletcher has been hot in New York, he has to prove he can either win without the early lead or go this far after a hotly contested pace, making him a likely underlay.

Belmont Derby Best Bet

In a field of 13, it is a great opportunity to bet a price horse to win if it looks like they have an excellent shot. And, Tiz the Bomb looks like just such a horse.

He was one of the top American turf horses at two, rallying smartly for second in a big field in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). Though he has yet to run on turf this year, he ran well over the Tapeta (a surface that turf horses can love), and tried the dirt a couple times. He returns to his best surface for this, he has pace versatility, and he may be underbet off his muddled recent form.

Belmont Derby Exotic Horses

Two others to consider for exotic wagers include Limited Liability and Grand Sonata. Limited Liability has class to prove, but he is an improving horse with some pace versatility, who is bred beautifully for this ten-furlong trip. Grand Sonata, the second-stringer for the red-hot Todd Pletcher, can improve with the extra distance and gives rider Tyler Gaffalione options for a trip.
