The Grand National: Our Power is ready to come on strong

For anyone who enjoys betting horse races, The Grand National (G3) at Aintree on Saturday, April 15 is one of the most important betting events of the year! Its £1 million purse makes it the richest jumps race in Europe, and its 40-horse field makes it a betting affair unlike any other in the world!

The race covers four miles and two furlongs over the course at Aintree racetrack, outside of Liverpool. Over that distance, the horses make a total of 30 jumps.

The Grand National dates back to 1839, when it was originally known as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase. From its initial winner Lottery to Noble Yeats last year, to horses like three-time winner Red Rum and two-time winner Tiger Roll in between, Grand National winners have become the heroes of racing fans.

Noble Yeats won the race as a 50-1 long shot in 2022, sending out retiring amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen with a win. Noble Yeats will not be such a long price this year, especially after finishing a credible fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1) behind Galopin des Champs.

Will Noble Yeats repeat or will a new face taste Grand National glory?  Keep reading to find out, and to see the best places to bet the Grand National online!

Grand National Favorites

Noble Yeats will be hot in the betting: not only did he win last year, but he has kept excellent form since, including a quality fourth in a much classier race last month, the Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1). He has the course aptitude and the quality, but he carries 19 pounds more than he did last year, a major concern in such a long race, especially given his minuscule price in a 40-horse field.

Delta Work comes into the Grand National off a win in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham, a positive sign. He also finished third in this race last year, suggesting some form over the course. With a pound less on his back this year than last year, he figures for the exotics again, though both on price and experience others have far more upside on the win end.

Grand National Best Bets

Our Power is well-weighted, carrying just 10 stone 2. He has a few long layoff lines, but his last two have been wins, it is encouraging that he came back relatively quickly after that last-out victory at Kempton, and he did win second-up a little over a year ago. The distance is a new test, but the price and the light impost make it worth finding out if he can do it.

Vanillier finished a good second to a serious chaser in Kemboy last out at Fairyhouse. Despite that quality recent line and the fact that he seems like the sort of runner who gets better as the distance get longer, he still only has to carry 10 stone 6 in the Grand National, an eminently fair impost.

Le Milos has not run a bad race in three starts since moving to the Skelton yard for this season. Though the distance is a new challenge, he runs like a horse with upside to stay it He also finished well ahead of Corach Rambler, the likely Grand National favorite, two back at Newbury.

Grand National Play-Againsts

One horse to take a shot against is Any Second Now. He has finished in the money in the last two editions of the Grand National, second last year and third two years ago. However, he is the highweight this year: carrying three more pounds than last year and 16 more than two years ago. Sure, it’s possible he hits the board again, off a prep win last out in the Webster (G2) at Navan. But, with enough other contenders the value is not there.

Corach Rambler is also taking a lot of money, and he is well weighted at 10 stone 5, but there are reasons to be skeptical of this horse who is sitting at the shortest price in the European markets. Based on his form, the distance of the Grand National may push him past his stamina. And, his late-running style doesn’t tend to see the most success in the Grand National -- no wonder, with so many horses to get through and so much potential for chaos.
