Texas Champions Weekend Features Trio of Friday Night Stakes at Sam Houston

A trio of stakes events for Texas-bred horses highlights a Friday night racing card at Sam Houston January 22 with the Yellow Rose, San Jacinto and Bara Lass taking place in races 8-10 as part of Texas Champions Weekend.

Each race will be run for a purse of $50,000 with the Yellow Rose kicking off in race 8 for four year-old fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs. Lasting Bubbles is the 2/1 favorite in that event following the eight year-old mare’s second-place finish in the Zia Park Distaff Stakes. Trained by Kevin Peek, Lasting Bubbles has won 12 of 35 career starts for earning over $466,000. Lindey Wade will be aboard breaking from post 3 in a six-horse field.

San Jacinto draws six

The San Jacinto, a mile and one sixteenth turf event for fillies and mares, also drew a six-horse field led by 2/1 shot Expect Royalty who won 4 of 6 start in 2015 for owner/trainer Leroy Pollok. The six year-old mare will be ridden by Iram Diego who will be aboard from post 6. Expect Royalty has won 9 of 17 career starts for earnings over $184,000.

Bara Lass looks competitive

The final stakes race, the Bara Lass, features eight three year-old fillies set to sprint six furlongs. 5/2 favorite Too Much Prada draws the rail for trainer Danele Durham. The lightly-raced filly won 2 of 3 starts as a juvenile, but finished a dismal ninth last out in the Gaylord Memorial Stakes October 23 at Remington.
