Royal Ascot: Spendarella Has The Speed And Kick to Upset Coronation
- Category :
The Coronation Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot is one of the best horse racing betting events of the summer! A field of twelve three-year-old fillies have entered to go a mile over the round course at Royal Ascot. At stake are Group 1 glory, a £500,000 purse, and the honor of winning a race whose history dates all the way back to the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1840.
The twelve-horse field for the Coronation includes top-class turf fillies from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Representing the Americans include Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Pizza Bianca and Appalachian (G2) winner Spendarella. Leaders among Europe’s contingent include Inspiral, making her first start since winning the Fillies’ Mile (G1) last year, and Cachet, winner of the British 1,000 Guineas (G1) two starts back.

- Tenebrism (Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore) - Post 4
Unlike at American or Canadian racetracks, post positions and betting numbers are not typically the same at European racecourses like Royal Ascot. Keep that in mind as you place your bets.
Make sure to track the odds on your horse at the online racebook you choose. Odds will fluctuate as the race gets closer. Unlike at a racetrack, where you will be given the post-time odds no matter when you wager, online betting is better because you can lock in the odds when you place your bet. You are guaranteed the best odds, and you can watch the race confident in the price you will get.
Coronation Stakes Favorites
The betting favorite will almost certainly be Inspiral. Those wagers will be based on faith in her form as a two-year-old. That form was strong: she finished the season undefeated in four starts, and won a pair of one-mile stakes races including the Fillies’ Mile (G1). However, she has yet to race this year. Though she needs to be in exotics, it is hard to get excited about the win price on her given that she hasn’t had the chance to show she trained on.
Cachet will be one of her most serious foes. Though she was defeated at Longchamp last out, the ground was softer that day. Her better efforts have come over good ground, and Royal Ascot is expected to be good-to-firm for this race. The fact that most of her races have had her on the front end could be tough, as there is a lot of speed, though she has won once from a stalking spot too.
From a betting standpoint, there will be plenty of value in betting that Discoveries bounces back. Though she ran off the board in the 1,000 Guineas (G1) last out, that was her first race off a layoff and last year she needed a race before rounding back into her best. Her connections have won this race twice with close relatives of hers, in 2018 and 2020, suggesting this may have been the real goal.
Coronation Stakes Value and Exotic Horses
Spendarella looked like a star in the making when she won the Appalachian at Keeneland, and she should be a great price in the Coronation. She has both tactical speed and a real turn of foot, a dangerous combination on the turf. With quite a bit of speed in the race, expect her to sit in range and kick on smartly late for trainer Graham Motion.
Although Prosperous Voyage has yet to win except in her maiden race, she has hit the board i her last five, races in which she was facing many of the same horses she will see in the Coronation. This consistent and pace-versatile filly should be able to show up again and get another piece underneath, even if she is looking like a consummate minor-shares type.
