Queen's Plate Handicapping

The top contender in the 2021 Queen’s Plate is #6 Munnyfor Ro. The last time she raced she looked very good winning the Woodbine Oaks, and she keeps top-class rider Justin Stein in the irons from that outing. Fillies tend to do well in the Queen’s Plate, and her improving form makes her a strong contender as she tries males for the first time.

Many of the horses in the Queen’s Plate tend to do their best work from on or near the lead. This means Munnyfor Ro will get a good setup for her late-running style. She does not need a total pace collapse to win; just an honest pace will do. She will certainly get that, making her an imposing presence in the lane.

#7 Riptide Rock steps up in distance for the Queen’s Plate, from a six-furlong win last time to a mile and a quarter this time. Nonetheless, he looks strong. That allowance win proves that he handles the Tapeta track at Woodbine well. He already has two-turn form against open company at Oaklawn, one of the toughest winter meets, and his distance pedigree is strong enough to carry him a mile and a quarter at this level.

#8 Keep Grinding, the morning line favorite, has a stalking to midpack style. Though he loses rider Justin Stein to Munnyfor Ro, Keep Grinding gets an excellent substitute: Rafael Hernandez, a well-proven big-race rider at Woodbine. Keep Grinding ran a strong second in an open stakes race last time, and now he comes third off the lay and drops against Canadian-breds. That could be a recipe for a good effort.

There are some intriguing price horses in the Queen’s Plate, and none more interesting than #10 Dance Some Mo. Trained by Graham Motion, he tries a stakes for the first time, but he has been doing well in open allowances at classy tracks. The distance should suit him well, as he is by Uncle Mo out of a mare from a family that always make noise in the Queen’s Plate, that of Dance Smartly and Dancethruthedawn.

Dance Some Mo has the tactical speed to work out a trip from the 10 gate. It also stands out that Patrick Husbands rides. Husbands is one of the best and most experienced riders at Woodbine and has already won two Queen’s Plates during his career.

#12 Tidal Forces can also improve in this spot. He has to turn the tables on some of his opponents after being defeated in the Marine (G3) last out. But, he is tactical enough to handle the outside gate, has already won a race going a mile and an eighth, and should be able to go even longer since he is by Malibu Moon from the close family of classy turf route mare Irish Mission.
