Prince of Wales's Stakes 2023: Bay Bridge turns back to his best distance

The Royal Ascot meeting is full of some of the major horse race betting events of the year, and few races are as eagerly awaited as the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s. The 2023 edition of the race, which covers 1 ¼ miles on the turf, happens on Wednesday, June 21. The race offers a £1 million purse, making it one of the richest of the royal meeting. Its winner also earns a berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Given those spoils, it draws one of the deepest and most interesting fields in world racing. Bay Bridge, who finished second in this race as the odds-on favorite last year, returns to do one better. He clashes once more with Luxembourg, who beat him by ½ length in the Gold Cup (G1) at the Curragh; he also crosses paths again with Adayar, who he beat by ½ length in the British Champion Stakes (G1) at Ascot last October.

Prince of Wales's Favorites

Adayar is one of the two favorites in early wagering for the Prince of Wales’s off a victory in the Gorden Richards (G3) last month at Newmarket. He has no shortage of class, with a pair of Group 1 wins in 2021 in the Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. However, both of those came at a mile and a half. He should get pace to close into here, but against company like this he may just find one or two too good, and be more of an exotics type.

Luxembourg is the other chalk in the early betting, and has a better win chance than Adayar. He is a bit more of a ten-furlong horse, with a top-level win in the Irish Champion (G1) last year over this distance. Though that came over soft going, he has form over the better ground he is likely to get at the royal meeting, and it would be no surprise for him to carve out a trip near, but not on, the pace.

Prince of Wales's Value Horses

Though Bay Bridge was a heavy favorite last year, he slips into this year’s edition a bit more under the radar, a joint third in early action. Should the gap between him and the top pair hold, he is a clear best bet in the Prince of Wales’s.

Though Luxembourg beat him last out at the Curragh, the turn back to 10 furlongs for the first time since winning the British Champions in October is a plus, as is the fact that he’s coming third off the layoff. Expect him to get a good stalking trip, and expect him to relish the good ground he should have on race day.

Anyone stretching out to bet a trifecta needs to try and get one of the real long shots in there. My Prospero is too short a price, and Classic Causeway is in far too tough. Mostahdaf, however, has some exotic claims. He was a well-beaten fourth at 1 ½ miles against Equinox, one of the best horses in the world, last out, But, two back he showed good ability shortening up to 1 5/16 miles. If he taps back into that form this time, he could juice up the exotics nicely.
