Preakness Jockeys and Trainers

Of the trainers and jockeys entered in the 2020 Preakness Stakes, Bob Baffert is seeking to break the record for most wins by a trainer. He is currently tied at 7, but with favored Authentic seems likely to take home his eighth trophy.

Steve Asmussen won this race in 2009 with Rachel Alexandra and 2007 with Curlin. Those two are the only trainers to win the Preakness in the past, with everyone else hoping for their first score.

As for jockeys in the Preakness Stakes, Robby Albarado won it on Curlin and is back aboard Swiss Skydiver. For all his brilliant Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup wins, jockey John Velazquez has never won a Preakness and will be trying hard to make this his year.

Preakness Tips

The brilliant filly Swiss Skydiver nearly ran in the Kentucky Derby, but after running second to the boys at Keeneland in July she was rerouted to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and finished second. The daughter of Daredevil won major races all across the country, including the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga, and the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks. She also won at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn Park.

Rachel Alexandra showed in 2009 that fillies can beat the boys in the Preakness, and Swiss Skydiver ran second behind Art Collector in the Blue Grass Stakes (G2), showing she can hang with the best. Trainer Ken McPeek has been working her well, and the chestnut filly will be ready to pounce here.

Authentic, however, is a tough foe. The 2020 Kentucky Derby winner has only been beaten once, and the horse that beat him has since been retired. Authentic won the Sham Stakes (G3) greenly to kick off the year, then added the Grade 2 San Felipe, Grade 1 Haskell, and the Derby itself. Bob Baffert trains the son of Into Mischief, who has earned over $2.8 million, more than anyone in the field.

Mr. Big News was third at 46-1 in the Kentucky Derby but had been knocking on the door for a big race. Bret Calhoun trains the son of Giant's Causeway, who has been top three in four of eight starts and has earned just under half a million. Gabriel Saez will be aboard the strapping bay horse.

Art Collector missed the Derby due to a foot issue, but is back and has been working well for this. He is riding a winning streak for trainer Tom Drury, but a win would leave everyone wondering what might have been if he had been able to contest the Run for the Roses.

Ny Traffic rounds out the best Preakness contenders. The son of Cross Traffic ran Authentic to a head in the Haskell (G1) at Monmouth Park in the summer. The gray colt is trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. and while he finished eighth in the Derby has more racing experience than most.
