Rebel Stakes Favorite
Newgrange will almost certainly be the favorite in the Rebel. Newgrange is a perfect 3-for-3, including a victory at Oaklawn in the Southwest (G3) over this same course and distance. His trainer, Bob Baffert, is also synonymous with the Rebel Stakes nowadays: he has won it eight times since 2010, including the last two years with Nadal and Concert Tour.
Newgrange has tactical speed, can run well from an inside gate, and his regular rider John Velazquez travels in to ride. With strong speed figures, it will be tough to beat him.
Rebel Stakes Value and Exotic Horses
One of the best ways to make money betting the Rebel Stakes will be to build exotic tickets around Newgrange, and there are several good options for doing that.
Chasing Time faces stakes company for the first time, but this is the perfect time to make that kind of move. Though his first four starts came at a sprint distance, including a maiden win, he looked better than ever when stretching to a mile last out and winning an allowance by seven and three-quarters easy lengths. He is tactical enough not to need the lead and should handle the extra sixteenth of a mile well.
Barber Road has yet to win a stakes race, but he has been a consistent presence in exotic wagers. Never worse than fourth in his career, he has been second in three consecutive stakes races, including two two-turn races at Oaklawn. That includes a second behind Newgrange in the Southwest (G3) last out. With pace versatility and good local form, he fits cozily.
For a longer shot, consider Ethereal Road. He closed from nowhere after a bad start to break his maiden in his first two-turn race over a dry track. He will be best suited if all the horses who can so speed do, but the pace in his maiden win was not truly torrid, either. D. Wayne Lukas can hit the board with a longshot in Hot Springs, and if Ethereal Road does not bounce he looks well primed.
