Fourstardave Handicap: Long shot Get Smokin has a pace advantage
- Category :
If you enjoy betting horse racing, there is no better season for playing the races than Saratoga. And, Saturday, August 13 is one of the most important races of the summer meet: the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G1), at one mile on the grass! In addition to the rich purse, the race also awards its winner a Win and You’re In berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1)!
The race has produced several live Breeders’ Cup Mile contenders, just in the last ten years. Wise Dan (2012, 2013) won the Mile both years he won the Fourstardave. Tourist (2016) and World Approval (2017) were also able to complete that double!

Fourstardave Handicap 2022 Field
This is the official field for the 2022 Fourstardave Handicap, including post positions, trainers, jockeys, and morning lines:
- Casa Creed (Bill Mott/Luis Saez) - 5/2
- Front Run the Fed (Caio Caramori/Irad Ortiz, Jr.) - 10/1
- Regal Glory (Chad Brown/Jose Ortiz) - 6/5
- Masen (Chad Brown/Flavien Prat) - 2/1
- Get Smokin (Mark Casse/Javier Castellano) - 8/1
Keep in mind: the morning line odds are the track’s best guess about what the horses’ odds will be at post time. You are not guaranteed these odds, and the on-track price on each horse will fluctuate until post-time. However, you have a better choice: play the Fourstardave at an online racebook.
Betting at online racebooks is better than playing at the track. Not only can you bet the races from any device with an internet connection, but they also let you lock in the best odds on your horse at the moment you bet. That way, you know exactly what you will get if your horse wins the race, and you are not at the mercy of a flurry of late betting action.

Fourstardave Handicap Analysis
You have selected the best online racebook for your betting style and made your account. Now, that means you are ready to start handicapping the race and choose the right horse to bet!
Fourstardave Handicap Favorites
Regal Glory is the likely favorite, and there is good reason why. Though she is a filly facing males for the first time, she carries a four-win streak into the race with recent speeds that make her the fastest in the field on recent form. Her tactical speed means she can carve a good trip, she has seven wins at a mile on grass, and is 3-for-3 at Saratoga. Expect a strong effort.
The biggest question for Regal Glory is the trainer: the Fourstardave is one of the few top American turf prices that Chad Brown has yet to capture. She is Brown’s better chance this year, though. He also sends out Masen, who has been solid in three starts in the United States but has yet to prove that he is as good as this tougher Grade 1 than the Maker’s Mark Mile where he ran second.
Casa Creed goes out for Bill Mott, who has already won a record four editions of the Fourstardave. Though Casa Creed is a two-time G1-winning turf sprinter, he has won at a mile before and finished third in this race last year. He has shown enough tactical versatility to suggest he won’t be too flat-footed, and he likes Saratoga enough that he should hit the board again.
Fourstardave Handicap Longer Shots
The best bet in the 2022 Fourstardave is Get Smokin. He stands to be the second longest shot in the field, but there s a lot to like. Trainer Mark Casse has won three of the last five editions of this race, and he has a good rapport with Javier Castellano. Pace-wise, he shapes as the speed of the speed in a short field and has a clean outside draw. He will need to run his best, but if he does, he may be hard to catch.
The other longshot in the field is Front Run the Fed. His name is a bit ironic, as he is a closer and not a frontrunner. That may pose trouble for him, given the short field and the fact that the pace will not be particularly strong. Furthermore, even with upside to improve second off the lay, his better stakes-quality form tends to come in sprints, not miles.
