E. P. Taylor Stakes 2023: Moira's form and stamina can carry her

The $750,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes (G1), the filly and mare turf feature of the Woodbine meet, is one of the betting races at Woodbine Racetrack! The race covers 1 ¼ miles over Woodbine’s sweeping outer turf course (also named after E. P. Taylor!), and perennially draws an exciting international field.

The race drew a field of ten fillies and mares. They include local prep winner and Canadian star Moira, high-flying globetrotter With the Moonlight, and recent Grade 1 winner Fev Rover. The road will not be easy for any of them, though, as the seven others bring no shortage of class and top-level racing experience.

E. P. Taylor Stakes Bet-Againsts

The E. P. Taylor is a particularly exciting betting opportunity because of the stances you can take against horses who are likely to take a lot of money.

In the case of With the Moonlight, play against her on top and only use her in underneath rungs. She will take a lot of money on the win end because of Charlie Appleby’s strong record with shippers, and she does have Grade 1 class. But, she has finished second in three of her four North American visits, typically at short odds. Especially first off a layoff since May, bet she’ll fall just short again.

In the case of Fev Rover, bet against her completely. She has the class, but this 1 ¼-mile distance is too long for her, especially since Rocky Sky will likely make sure that she doesn’t just get to crawl on the front end like she did two back in the (shorter) Beverly D.

E. P. Taylor Stakes Top Contenders

Moira bounced back into her best form last out in the Canadian (G2), the local prep for this race. That day she made a sweeping move from near the back of a short field, and bounded clear to win by 6 ¼ lengths. She is versatile enough to do that, or even stay a bit closer if the pace up front turns out to be slower than expected. And, she has the stamina to stay the 1 ¼-mile trip.

Skims, who finished second to Moira in the Canadian, has upside to improve in this spot. The Shug McGaughey trainee comes second off the lay for this, which is a 18% winning move for the barn. She has tactical pace, she is bred beautifully for the distance, and she is a better horse now than she was the only other time she tried the trip last year. Furthermore, the rain in the days leading up to the race means she should take to the footing.

E. P. Taylor Stakes Exotic Horses

Two horses to consider for underneath rungs are Kalifornia Queen and Amazing Grace. Kalifornia Queen was third in this race two years ago, and should find both the distance and the condition of the turf to her liking. Amazing Grace should also take well to rain-affected going, she fires regularly for lower exotics, and even though this is a class test she could also move forward with first-time Lasix.
