Cheltenham Gold Cup: Bravemansgame is ready to face the best

The Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1) is one of the most hotly-anticipated races of the year for anyone who enjoys betting horse races! One of the world’s most iconic steeplechases, it takes place this year on Friday, March 17. A field of thirteen top chasers will go three miles, two and a half furlongs for one of the most iconic honors in British horse racing — and furthermore, a huge £625,000 purse.

The first two horses across the wire in the last two editions of this race return in 2023: Minella Indo beat A Plus Tard in 2021, while A Plus Tard turned the tables on Minella Indo in 2022. Noble Yeats, winner of the iconic Grand National at Aintree last year, also steps up in class for Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites

Bravemansgame chases for the first time at Cheltenham; his only previous experience at the festival was over hurdles. But, he is one of the most exciting horses in chasing right now, with wins in six of his last seven, including two sharp scores since having wind surgery. He thrashed Royale Pagaille in the King George VI (G1) last out, exactly the kind of performance that builds confidence leading into an even deeper Grade 1.

Galopin des Champs will be the favorite, and with good reason. He has won seven of his last eight races, including the Irish Gold Cup (G1) last out, and is the leading hope for top jumps trainer Willie Mullins.Though he fell at the last fence last year at Cheltenham, he seems an even better prospect this year than he was then, and seven pounds under top weight is well-weighted for a horse whose form is as good as his.

A Plus Tard is the top weight, with the rest of the field carrying between seven and 19 fewer pounds. He won last year and was second in 2021, but his recent form was better both of those years. This year, he is coming in off of pulling up last out, a concern since he had never previously finished off the board, much less pulled up. At a short price and top weight, he is underlaid.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Value and Exotic Horses

Ahoy Senor is an intriguing exotics and each-way option. Though he is not as consistent as some in this field, he does tend to show up strong at Cheltenham, including a win in the Cotswold (G2) last out and a second in a Grade 1 novice at last year’s Festival. With his good local form and his good weighting (he is a stone below top weight), he appeals at a price.

Minella Indo won two years ago and was second last year. Though he may not be quite as good now as he was two years ago, particularly, he shows up at Cheltenham and he comes in off a credible enough victory in Grade 3 company. There is a good chance this de Bromhead second-stringer will have enough to find an underneath rung of the exotics.
