Galopin des Champs won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2023, and is in a great position to win again in 2024. He has held good form in the ensuing year, and comes into this spot off a win in the Irish Gold Cup (G1), just as he did last year. He should be able to stay the distance well, he handles soft ground well, and should be well prepared by Willie Mullins for this prestigious goal.

Fastorslow did beat Galopin des Champs twice last fall, suggesting he has the class to mount a challenge. However, over the longer distance of the Irish Gold Cup, Galopin des Champs was able to turn the tables. If he holds his form he should be one of the better contenders, though the distance does give the favorite a discernible advantage.

L’Homme Presse has the most upside of anyone to topple the favorite in this spot. He was a promising novice in 2022, including a win in the Novices’ Chase (G1) at Cheltenham in 2022. He was off the track in 2023, but returned in winning form this year at Lingfield and finished second when returning to graded company at Ascot. He will have to move forward third off the lay but has the upside and is still unexposed at this kind of a trip.

Bravemansgame finished second in this race last year, and though he has not won since the 2022 King George VI (G1), he hit the board in all five starts last year and came into the Cheltenham Gold Cup off a similar layoff as this year. Expect him to be well prepared; though a win would be a surprise, his consistency should get him a piece.

The Real Whacker will be one of the longest shots on the board, but he brings some upside to the table. He is a bit of a Cheltenham specialist, winning the Novices’ Chase last year and coming in off of a second-place finish in a local prep. His form over soft going is strong, and he is unexposed over this kind of a distance. If he takes a step forward off his last, he could find the frame.
