The Canadian Triple Crown is a series for three major betting horse races in Canada, and the series reaches its exciting conclusion on Sunday, October 1 at Woodbine Racetrack with the Breeders’ Stakes! The race, at 1 ½ miles on the grass, offers a $400,000 purse and is open to the best 3-year-olds bred in Canada. It is the longest race of the Canadian Triple Crown, and the only one on the lawn.
The history of the Breeders’ Stakes dates back 134 years to when Helen Leigh won the 1889 version of the race. Stars who have won it since include Windfields, Overskate, Runaway Groom, With Approval, and Dance Smartly. Its most prominent recent winner, Channel Maker, won in 2017; this year, at age nine, he is still winning graded stakes!

Breeders' Stakes Best Bet
The best bet in the Breeders’ Stakes is Tito’s Calling. The pace is likely to be sluggish in the Breeders’, and she proved in the Wonder Where that such a thing is no problem for her. She tracked a slow pace and was able to make a smart bid and draw off to win by four lengths. If she can work out that kind of a trip again behind another slow pace on the Woodbine lawn, this filly can beat the boys at a likely fair price.
Breeders' Stakes Contenders
The horse likely to be setting that slow pace in the Breeders’ is Paramount Prince, the one who also set the slow pace in the King’s Plate and took it on the front end. Turf is a question, since he has never actually tried the lawn. But, horses who like Tapeta can often translate that form to the lawn. Between that and the likely favorable pace scenario, it would be no surprise to see him win two out of three jewels of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Wickenheiser finished well into a slow pace in the Wonder Where last out. Even though she’ll have a slow pace again here, things could still go better. For one, her start was not perfect and if she can come away a little better she may be able to either sit closer or finish better. Furthermore, she has one of the better distance pedigrees, giving her a chance to outlast her foes if the 1 ½-mile trip tires them out.
Breeders' Stakes Exotics Players
The most interesting longshot in the 2023 Breeders’ Stakes is British Artillery. He has class to prove, but is also one of the few in the field who has the speed to sit close to Paramount Prince early. That gives him the jump on many of his foes. Furthermore, this son of English Channel has perhaps the best distance pedigree in the field, giving him not only position but also a possibility to outlast his foes.
Even though Elysian Field never looked like she was going to reel in Paramount Prince down the lane in the King’s Plate, she was not losing ground on him in the late stages of that 1 ¼-mile race, either. The pace setup suggests that she probably won’t be able to reel in the pace here, either, unless there is a failure in stamina. Even so, she is a consistent and classy horse who should be able to chase on for another piece of the exotics.
