Breeders' Stakes: Harley'n'rose can turn the tables on better ground

For anyone interested in seeing and betting major horse races around the world, the Breeders’ Stakes (G3) on Saturday, April 29 is one of the most important races in the Australian autumn! The 1200-meter (about six-furlong) turf sprint at Morphettville drew a field of eight to run for a purse of AUS$127,250, and the fast track to even bigger targets later in the racing season.

The Breeders’ Stakes has a history that stretches back to 1955. Two of its most notable winners ever came in the 1960s. Australian Hall of Famer Tobin Bronze, who won in 1965, went on to win major races like the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup before winning in the United States as well, and standing stud in America. 1963 winner Pago Pago and 1966 winner Storm Queen both went on to win the Golden Slipper, Australia’s most important juvenile race.

The most recent winner, See You in Heaven (2022), went on to win the Sandown Guineas (G2) later in the year. Tequila Time (2018) followed his win in the Breeders’ with another group-level win, in the South Australia Sires’ Produce Stakes (G2), also at Morphettville.

  2. Harley’n’rose (Gordon Richards & Damien Moyle/Lachlan Neindorf) - Post 5

Breeders' Stakes Favorites

Heuristic is the favorite leading into the Breeders’ Stakes. Owned by global powerhouse Godolphin, he comes into the Breeders’ off a 0.8-length win in a handicap for juveniles at 1100 meters at Morphettville, where he stalked, pounced, and held off Harley’n’rose. He is going in the right direction and may handle the extra 100 meters, though his better form has come over softer ground and the course is expected to be good for the Breeders’.

This could give Harley’n’rose the chance to turn the tables. Harley’n’rose’s lone victory did come over good ground, and he should have no trouble with the extra 100 meters in trip. Coming third off a freshening, he has further chance to move forward and can run even better after that strong second over softer going.

Causation showed speed on debut at Pakenham after a poor start. Though she was run down late and finished fourth of five in that debut, she was still only beaten 1.35 lengths for the whole thing. Without a lot of early speed in the Breeders’ field, she could get a good trip on the front end and may have more left late if she gets out of the gate better from a fairly good draw.

Breeders' Stakes Exotics Horses

Treasurway is the second choice in the antepost action; consistent, she has never won but finished third in all five of her career races including one attempt at the Group 3 level. That is good experience to carry into this race, and she could move forward second off a layoff, though with such a record of not passing the last few horses and without a lot of speed in this race, keep her for underneath shares.

Watch the market on Stupendous and respect any action she takes. She is making her debut in the Breeders’, though she did get a tune-up in a trial (basically, a training race) at Murray Bridge on April 20. She will need to improve, but it is probable that she was not fully cranked for that trial and she can take a step forward in this first career race.
