Nest will probably be the Breeders’ Cup Distaff favorite. Though she and Secret Oath were near each other at the top of the sophomore division earlier in the year, Nest has trained on better. She thrashed her own age group twice at Saratoga, then beat quality older horses in the Beldame (G2). This is a step up to the best fillies and mares, but she has won at Keeneland and can make good account.
The slight nod, though, goes to morning-line second choice Malathaat. A three-time winner at Keeneland, she has spent the entire year holding her own against the best older fillies and mares. She knows how to finish well, especially at Keeneland, and a mile and an eighth may well be her very best trip.
Clairiere is the other one in this field who has been in the very top distaff races all year. She looked like the one training on better than Malathaat until a clunker in the Personal Ensign (G1). Perhaps that was too bad to be believed, but also she has not always brought her best at 1 ⅛ miles and her deeper-closing style may work against her at Keeneland.
Breeders’ Cup Distaff Exotics Horses
Society is the most interesting of the rest of the Distaff field. She was well beaten by Nest in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), but that came after a poor start. Should she come away better, she has a clean outside gate and has a good chance to make the front and position herself as the one to catch. That puts this improving three-year-old in a good spot.
Two others merit inclusion in exotics. Blue Stripe has improved as she has gotten her bearings in the United States, and does not need a large step up from her Clement L. Hirsch (G1) win last out to put her in the running for a piece. Search Results has been just a small cut below the best of the distaff division this year, but can get nine furlongs and has never missed the board in 11 starts.
