2023 Breeders' Cup Distaff: Idiomatic can gain tactical advantage

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Saturday, November 4 a Santa Anita Park is one of the most important races of the year, with the top two-turn dirt fillies and mares in the world lining up to go 1 ⅛ miles. It is also one of the best horse racing betting events of the year, given its large and classy field.

The likely favorite is Idiomatic, who has been improving fast in her last few starts. However, her foes include Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous as well as Clairiere, who has run well in the last two editions of this race.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicapping

Now that your betting account is set up and you’ve seen the list of runners, let’s dive a little deeper. These are the most important horses to include on your betting tickets for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Top Picks

Idiomatic will be one of the strongest favorites of the Breeders’ Cup, but there are good reasons why. She has been facing the best of the Distaff division in recent starts and beating them with confidence. Though her last pair of races have been on the front end, she has been able to track in previous starts, important because several of her foes are speed-oriented horses. If she holds her form, she will be tough to topple.

If anyone can, look to Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous. She still has to prove herself against older foes, as she has only run against fellow sophomores. However, she should be the right price to bet she will hold her own. And, even though she was defeated last out in the Cotillion, that was behind a cozy easy leader, not the contested early pace that she will face in the Breeders’ Cup.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Exotics Horses

Clairiere has become a fixture in this race: she was beaten by less than a length both last year and the year before. This year she likely gets an advantageous pace setup, with a sharp pace in front of her, though the Santa Anita course does not typically play well for horses trying to get all the way there as closers. Especially since she bounced back off a disappointing Personal Ensign last year, too, expect the good version of her to rally for a share.

Two west-coast runners are also worth a look, too: Desert Dawn and Adare Manor. Desert Dawn has made a career of outrunning her odds, and has filled out exactas behind Adare Manor in her last two. However, this time around, she’ll get a better setup to rate and rally, given that it’s a big speed-laden field and not a group of four or five horses. That could set her up for her best.

Adare Manor will be one of the shorter-priced runners in the field, and probably an underlay in the win pool given the softer company she has faced all year. However, like Idiomatic, she is another speed horse who has shown some ability to lay just off the pace and run a winning race. She has yet to prove herself against a field this deep, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see her in the mix.
