Bay Bridge Can Win G1 Debut in Prince of Wales's

The Prince of Wales’s (G1) is one of the major betting horse races of the illustrious Royal Ascot meeting. The race on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 offers a £1 million purse, one of the first races in Royal Ascot history to offer such a large prize fund. It also offers its winner a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The race covers a distance of about ten furlongs on the turf, and perennially draws some of the most important horses in the world.

Lord North, who won this race in 2020, will try to become only the fourth two-time winner in this race whose history goes all the way back to 1862. He will face a field of five that includes Bay Bridge, winner of his last five races, and Shahryar, who won the Sheema Classic (G1) last out and tries to add another international crown.

Prince of Wales's Favorites

Bay Bridge is the hot betting favorite in the Prince of Wales’s, and there are good reasons for that. In most cases it makes sense to be a bit skeptical of a heavy favorite who is trying Group 1 company for the first time. However, Bay Bridge has the right resume for this. Not only does he keep passing every test impressively and do well on firmer going, but his running style will make him tough to beat.

This is a five-horse field without much in the way of pace. Bay Bridge, at least, has shown good tactical speed through his career. His ability to get close to the pace in his previous races may well be enough to put him on the lead in this five-horse paceless affair. When the real running begins, he will have the jump.

His most imposing foe is Shahriyar, who comes in from Japan. Last year’s Japanese Derby winner has already proven he can ship internationally and win, since he scored in the Sheema Classic (G1) last out in Dubai. He probably will not get the early lead over Bay Bridge, but should be able to track in range and pose the most credible challenge.

Prince of Wales's Value Horses

It would be a lot easier to tip a longshot in the Prince of Wales’s if one had a record of going to the front; in that case, he would have the chance to shoot to the front and steal the race. However, none of the longer-priced horses are true frontrunning types.

At least Lord North, winner of this race two years ago, tried running a little closer up last out in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1) and kept on for fourth, beaten less than two lengths for top honors. He could improve in his second start after the ship home from Dubai (where he won the Dubai Turf (G1)), and he should find this good, good-to-firm ground no trouble.

State of Rest is a proven globetrotter, with G1 wins in both the United States and Australia. However, he has shown his better performances come a little further off the pace, which could spell running-style trouble. Grand Glory has kept good company in France, though could be the most pace-compromised of the lot and she has shown her even better form over softer turf.
