Arc de Triomphe Favorites
The likely favorite in the Arc is Ace Impact, though there are good reasons to ask questions. He has never been defeated in five starts, but he is a three-year-old who has never faced older and has never faced horses of a class like this. The distance and the firmer going should be fine, but he faces more experienced foes. He could find the frame, but at a short price others are more exciting bets.
Specifically, take a long look at the pair coming out of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1), Hukum and Westover. Hukum gets the nod between that pair. He carries a three-win streak into the Arc, with two of those victories coming at this twelve-furlong trip. His tactical pace should give him the jump on several major foes given the likely modest pace, and the good ground should be to his liking.
Westover is a twelve-furlong specialist who has been a consistent presence in top-level company this year; in four outings he has not been out of the exacta. The good ground should suit him as well, and he should also be able to chase in range of a modest pace. Though he was only sixth in the Arc last year, that was over very soft ground and he is a better horse this time around.
Arc de Triomphe Price Horses
Germany-based Simca Mille steps up in class after a pair of victories as the odds-on favorite. Still, there are good reasons he merits a look, especially for each-way and exotic bets. The 1 ½-mile trip is his preference, and the good ground suits well. From a pace perspective, he is tactical enough to handle the likely modest pace. And, he already won on a trip to Longchamp last year for a Group 2.
Another to consider is Through Seven Seas, a mare who comes over from Japan. Shippers from Japan have dominated the world’s biggest race days over the last few years. Through Seven Seas finished second to Equinox last out in the Takarazuka Kinen (G1); Equinox would probably be the favorite if he came for the Arc. She still has to prove herself at 1 ½ miles, but that disappointing try at the trip came over two years ago and she has improved since.
