Arc de Triomphe: Alpinista Holds Top Form

Arc de Triomphe Alpinista Holds Top Form

Up to 20 of the best horses in the world will contest the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday, October 2! The 1 ½-mile turf race is one of the best betting races of the year, and it is a race that the connections of leading grass horses plan their entire year around.

Torquator Tasso upset the Arc at 72-1 odds in 2021. He will attempt to repeat this year, though he will face tough company including the likes of Alpinista, Luxembourg, and a four-deep Japanese contingent including Titleholder. Though the final field will not be determined until Friday, September 30, preliminary declarations are out and it is the perfect time to start thinking about who will win and where to play the race.

Arc de Triomphe Favorites

No horse brings sharper form into the Arc than Alpinista. This mare has won seven races in a row, including five consecutive Group 1 events. Four of those recent top-level wins have come against males, as well. With tactical speed, the ability to handle many different tracks and turf conditions, and excellent twelve-furlong form, she has the tools to shine in Europe’s most important race.

Among the three-year-olds, Luxembourg is the most imposing. He has lost only once in five starts, and his most recent win came in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1) against older company. The biggest question for this Aidan O’Brien trainee is the distance: typically Arc winners have won at 1 ½ miles, and he has not raced past 1 ¼ miles so far.

Titleholder brings excellent Japanese form to the Arc. He has won races as long as two miles, meaning stamina is a given. However, his last-out victory in the 1 ⅜-mile Takarazuka Kinen (G1) shows that this stayer may be sharp enough for the Arc trip. His biggest question is the turf condition; with rain in the forecast, the going will be boggier than anything he has ever seen in Japan.

Though Torquator Tasso will not be 72-1 like last year, he should still be well adrift from the top of the market, meaning he should provide some value. He was not disgraced when second two starts ago in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1) at Ascot, and the rain in the forecast means he should relish his preferred softer going.

Onesto fell half a length short behind Luxembourg last out in the Irish Champion Stakes. However, unlike Luxembourg, he has actually tried the 1 ½-mile trip. That try came in a Group 1 at Longchamp, as well: the Grand Prix de Paris earlier this year. The Irish Champion was his first start off a freshening, and if he moves forward on the stretch out, he figures strongly.

No trainer has won more editions of the Arc than Andre Fabre. This year, Mare Australis bears his standard. He has to bounce back, as last-out he was well bet in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud but ended up well beaten by Alpinista. However, two starts back he posted a strong win over soft ground at Chantilly, and he should relish the ground in the Arc.
