Bet on The George Ryder Stakes

The George Ryder Stakes is part of a star-studded day of racing at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, Australia and is run in conjunction with the prestigious Golden Slipper Stakes in March or April each year as part of the autumn racing carnival. The purse is $1 million and the race is contested on the turf at 1500 meters or seven and a half furlongs. The winner gets an automatic ballot exemption for the $3 million Doncaster Handicap.

The race was inaugurated in 1903 and was originally known as the Railway Stakes. The name changed in 1974 to honor George Ryder, a prominent member of the Australian racing industry. The race was originally run at 1300 meters (six and a half furlongs) and has been held at the current distance since 1986.

Over the course of the rich history of the George Ryder Stakes, several horses have won multiple editions including Prince Regoli (1962, 1963), Foresight (1968, 1969), Manikato (1979, 1980), Campaign King (1987, 1988) and Lonhro (2003, 2004). Lonhro was named Australia’s Middle Distance Champion and Horse of the Year in 2004.

2017 George Ryder Stakes Contenders

Australia’s racing fans were in for a treat in the 2016 edition of the George Ryder Stakes which featured Winx, the popular mare with an impressive resume and a history of defeating male rivals.

She did not disappoint. Her path towards being considered in the same league as previous great Australian mares such as Makybe Diva, Sunline and Black Cavier continued with her eighth straight victory and fifth Group 1 win. As has become her trademark, she did not win by a large margin but did so convincingly under Hugh Bowman. Kermadec was second followed by the accomplished Press Statement in third.

Her success continued with a resounding victory in the $3 million Doncaster Mile despite struggling over incredibly soft footing. Her 2016/2017 campaign is off to a strong start and she will likely be pointing towards defending her title in the George Ryder Stakes.
