Bet on The Blue Diamond Stakes

In the Blue Diamond Stakes, the next generation of Australia’s Thoroughbred racing stars is showcased. Held every February, the race is restricted to two-year-olds and is run at 1200 meters on the turf which translates to just about six furlongs. The race is held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne and offers a Group 1 status as well as a purse of $1.5 million which makes it the richest race in the country for two-year-olds.

Since the inaugural running in 1971, the Blue Diamond Stakes has soared in popularity and routinely attracts a full field of talented juveniles. Some of the most popular and successful contemporary racehorses in Australis’s history have used this race as a stepping stone towards remarkable careers. One of the most noteworthy winners was Redoute’s Choice in 1999 who went on to win the Caulfield Guineas the following year and became one of the most prolific stallions in the world.

Trained David Hayes holds the record for the most wins with five and jockey Dwayne Dunn has also won the Blue Diamond Stakes five times. The stakes record was set in 1994 by Hurricane Sky who stopped the clock in 1:08.1.

2017 Blue Diamond Stakes Contenders

The 2016 edition of the Blue Diamond Stakes was won by the highly regarded juvenile Extreme Choice. His grandsire, Redoute’s Choice, won the race in 1999.

After winning the first two starts of his career impressively including the Chairman’s Stakes, a Group 3 event, it was time to tackle Group 1 competition. Despite a wide trip, he launched a bold rally to win by 1 ¾ lengths for trainer Mick Price who also saddled the runner-up, Flying Artie. Jockey Craig Newitt picked up the mount on the colt when his regular pilot, Damien Oliver, elected to ride Flying Artie.

Following that race, Extreme Choice finished a disappointing fourth in the Golden Slipper Stakes after a troubled trip.
