2022 Pegasus World Cup Handicapping And Odds

The eyes of the horse racing world turn to Gulfstream Park on Saturday, January 29 for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1)!  The race drew a field of nine horses, ready to go a mile and an eighth on the dirt. With a distance that appeals to both milers and Classic types, this race is always a clash of the older male dirt titans, and 2022 is no exception!

The Pegasus World Cup was first run in 2017, and in its short history some great horses count themselves among its winners. Those winners include Arrogate, the richest North American horse of all time, and Gun Runner, now one of the hottest sires at stud. Knicks Go, the 2021 winner, will try to become the first two-time Pegasus winner this year.

Can he do it? Keep reading to find out!

Pegasus World Cup Handicapping

Now that you have chosen a trusted online sportsbook and made your account, you are ready to start handicapping the 2022 Pegasus World Cup.

Pegasus World Cup Favorites

Favorites often go well in the Pegasus World Cup. In five editions of the race, each one has been taken by either the betting favorite or the second horse in the market. There will be a well-defined top pair in the betting in this year’s Pegasus: 2021 Pegasus World Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner #1 Knicks Go, and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner #4 Life Is Good.

Though Knicks Go has proven that he can handle both Gulfstream and the mile and an eighth, he is a feast-or-famine kind of horse: he rolls clear early and wins, or he has to work too hard early and flattens to finish off the board. He does not often run into foes who make him work that hard, but this time, he will.

Real miler speed can spell trouble for Knicks Go, and that is exactly what Life Is Good brings to the table. He is fast enough to win a sprint, classy enough to carry his speed two turns, and has the pedigree to make nine furlongs a worthy endeavor. Drawn a few stalls outside of Knicks Go, Life Is Good should be able to take the race to him early, and take over in the lane, to give Todd Pletcher his first ever Pegasus.

Pegasus World Cup Value and Exotic Horses

As well as favorites perform on the win end in the Pegasus, exactas and trifectas are the right place to go shopping for prices in this race. Every year, at least one horse at 10/1 or more has run into the trifecta, and some years two longshots will run their ways into the top three. Therefore, finding live longshots and betting intra-race exotics is a great betting strategy!

#8 Endorsed is the most interesting horse for the exotics. Though his recent races have been sprints, his two tries at this mile and an eighth trip have both resulted in runner-up finishes in stakes at the classy Saratoga meet. He has the tactical speed to work a good trip, and in four starts at Gulfstream park, Endorsed has never been out of the money.

#3 Stilleto Boy has come a long way from being a 16/1 surprise in the 2021 Iowa Derby. He has since faced top horses in Southern California, amassing a pair of Grade 1 placings including a second in the nine-furlong Awesome Again (G1) at Santa Anita. With tactical speed and the ability to run well at many different tracks, Stilleto Boy should find another good effort at Gulfstream.

#5 Empty Tomb intrigues for a piece underneath, as well. Though he has yet to win at a mile and an eighth, he has finished in the top three five times in his seven tries at the distance. Though he is unlikely to outjump the two favorites early, he has the tactical speed to race in range from the jump, and high-percentage Gulfstream jockey Paco Lopez should be able to give him a good trip.
