Turf Paradise Facts: Turf Paradise is located near Phoenix, Arizona and holds both thoroughbred and quarter horse racing. It all started back in 1954 when businessman Walter Cluer purchased some 1,400 acres of then barren desert. Even thought Cluer lacked education passed an 8th grade level, he wanted to attempt his dream of building a first-class horse racing track in Phoenix. Of course, many believed his actions would lead to complete and utter failure. Cluer was not easily swayed and on January 7, 1956 Turf Paradise opened to a full house. Every seat was filled. There's no doubt that locals were thrilled to finally have a big-time horse betting venue in the area. In 1980, Cluer handed over the reigns and Turf Paradise was renovated. A new seven-furlong infield turf course was constructed. It had a one mile and one-eight chute. Nine years later, a new owner took over and Turf Paradise ventured into off-track wagering. The new move was correct as Turf Paradise began showing a profit and was able to pay down debts. Turf Paradise is now featured at hundreds of simulcast locations. Since then Turf Paradise has undergone a few different ownership changes. The track continues to flourish annually. Turf Paradise has seen many renovations and is a featured horse racing track in the country. The track features various stakes races throughout its season. Last year, it was home to one Grade III stakes race and two Grade II stakes races. The Grade III stakes race was the AQRA Turf Paradise Open Quarter Horse Futurity. The two Grade II stakes races were the MBNA American West/Southwest Challenge Championship and the AQRA Turf Paradise Open Quarter Horse Derby. As you can see, Turf Paradise has come a long way and now features corporate sponsorship.
