The land that the new racetrack occupied was once a failed track from the Great Depression era. That night at Pompano Park was more than simply a new horse racing track opening up - it was the signal of a new era about to being in Florida and the country itself. Pompano Park had to overcome many hurdles, but on February 4, 1964 the last hurdle was jumped and horse betting racing at Pompano Park would never look back. Over the forty magnificent years of operation, Pompano Park has been lovingly referred to as the "Winter Capital of Harness Racing." Through its history, Pompano Park has been home to fierce battles and some of the finest harness horse racing in the country. Pompano Park is not just about horse racing. They have a humble dedication to society and their community as well. Every year the track features special fund raising events to help create a better world and foster positive community relations. In 1992, Pompano Park took in and sheltered thousands of otherwise homeless animals after mighty hurricane Andrew dealt a devastating blow to Florida. Pompano Park is situated on 331 wonderful acres. Their entertainment destination can accommodate approximately 20,000 spectators and thousands of vehicles. Their stabling allows for the housing of up to 1,000 horses. Live harness racing happens year round at Pompano Park as does simulcasting from around the United States. Pompano Park has hosted many famous stakes events including the Breeders Crown. The history of Pompano Park is legendary for the area and their future looks to be much of the same. The state of Florida is home to some of the top harness racing events anywhere and Pompano Park is part of that tradition. |
