The common adage goes it's not how you start, but how you finish. That adage can really be used to describe Northfield Park. The racetrack was constructed some seven decades ago - in 1934. Originally, it was hailed as Sportsman Park. The great plan was to build a great track in Ohio for greyhound racing. The plan, as it turned out, was not so great. Enthusiasm for greyhound racing failed to materialize and ownership was forced to make a change. This led to another seemingly great idea - midget card racing. This idea, as you might imagine, took hold for some time.

Eventually, the enthusiasm for car racing at the track diminished and ownership was forced to make yet another change. The decision was to demolish Sportsman Park. That was in 1956. Just one short year later, a premier harness racing track was borne on that same spot. It was called Northfield Park and horse wagering fans were very excited. Northfield Park was the only harness track in the Northeast of the state. The new track was an instant hit and became home for many champions.

As is the case with all race tracks, the Northfield Park eventually needed improvements. In 1984, Carl Milstein spent $20,000,000 improving Northfield Park and bringing it up to the expected standard of the day. Northfield Park became one of the premier locations in the horse racing world. Today, Northfield Park features live horse racing betting action along side with great simulcast venues. The track pushes the limits of Ohio law by having 204 race cards each and every year. Weather tends permit horse racing action every time.

Northfield Park has their share of stakes races. On such race is held annually and is a crowd pleaser. The Battle of Lake Erie is a pacer race that invites the best pacers in North America to come to Northfield Park and compete for a purse of $150,000.
