Breeders' Cup Handicapping

Improbable is the favorite for the 1 1/4 mile Breeders' Cup Classic and is one of three runners hailing from the Bob Baffert barn. All three drew alongside each other, with 2020 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and Maximum Security, who crossed the finish line first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, drawn on his outside. These three runners will receive most of the hype and press leading up to the race, and for good reason.

Improbable has won three of his four starts this year, including one Grade 1 race over this ten-furlong distance. He has won three straight Grade 1 races and was good enough to go favored in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes last year. He can show speed or sit off the pace, was a Grade 1 winner at two, and generally has the class to flourish in this event under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Stablemate Authentic is being a bit overlooked in this spot off a brilliant battle against Breeders' Cup Distaff contender Swiss Skydiver in the 2020 Preakness. Authentic had won the Kentucky Derby and the Haskell (G1) this year already, then missed by just a neck in the Preakness after duking it out in the stretch. John Velazquez is a seasoned rider who will ride confidently in the Breeders' Cup Classic. If Authentic can get loose on the lead, he will be tough to run down.

Maximum Security was flat in his last race, but his overall record is very impressive. Although he was disqualified in last year's Kentucky Derby, his resume includes wins in the Florida Derby, Saudi Cup, Haskell, and Cigar Mile. In August he won the Pacific Classic (G1) impressively. He was already "In" the Breeders' Cup at that point, and didn't need to win his final prep, which Improbable took. Maximum Security is reportedly training like a monster for this race.

One can't talk about Breeders' Cup Classic favorites and not mention 2020 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tiz the Law. He went on to take the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, then finished second in the Kentucky Derby. Rather than run in the Preakness, trainer Barclay Tagg decided to keep the son of Constitution fresh for this race. He has been training well at Keeneland.

By My Standards is an interesting shot at 10-1. He has always been good, winning half of his 12 starts and earning over $1.7 million. He started this season with three straight impressive wins, then lost to Classic rivals Improbable and Tom's d'Etat before winning the Alysheba (G2) at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby weekend. He is based in Kentucky, has trained well here all year, and had the fastest workout of 31 at the distance on October 24.

Best Bets for the Breeders' Cup

While Improbable is the favorite, he is not the best bet for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
