Maywood Park Facts: Maywood Park is located just 10 miles west of downtown in Chicago, Illinois. Maywood Park has been around for some time now and back when it started, the area was largely wooded. Today, it sites right by one of the busiest airports in the nation. Even during the Great Depression, harness horse racing action was going down at Maywood Park. The first official horse racing license in Illinois was not issued until 1946 - just after WWII - and it was issued to Maywood Park. During the 1960s, Maywood Park rose as a premier half-mile standard bred racetrack in North America. Sadly Mr. Galt, Maywood Park's owner, passed away in 1968 at the age of 93. Maywood Park is dedicated to standard bred racing. It's the only dedicated park of its kind in all of Chicago. It has conducted harness racing for 59 consecutive years - an Illinois record. Maywood Park was so famous that it was featured on the NBC "Tonight Show" in 1957. During the 1970's Maywood Park went under some construction efforts to evolve the race track - including new barns, stalls and blacksmith shops. The Maywood Park was the first Chicago based horse racing betting track to host the prestigious Breeders Crown event. That was in 1984 and it was a fine moment in Maywood Park's hist Recently, Maywood Park has continued its fine tradition of harness racing. It currently owns four of the twelve world pacing records for a half-mile track. The largest crowd ever to pack into Maywood Park was just over twenty thousand strong. Today, Maywood Park is home to excellent horse racing wagering, festive crowds and great betting on horse action. The tradition and legend lives on at Maywood Park. In the harness horse racing world, there are a few top tracks - like Meadowlands - that come to mind. Maywood Park is one of the upper level harness horse racing tracks.
