Keeneland Race TrackLive Keeneland Odds from Bodog RacebookKeeneland Facts: Keeneland Race Track had its first race meet in 1936. Back then dirt tracks was the order of the day. Keeneland did not experiment with Turf track horse racing until 1985. While this might appear to be late in the game to be finally adding turf horse racing, Keeneland was still the first race track in Kentucky to offer turf horse racing. Keeneland features two main tracks-one dirt and one turf. The dirt track is a mile and a sixteenth oval. The turf track is a 7 furlong oval - just slightly smaller that the dirt oval track. Having two tracks of this size allows Keeneland a great deal of flexibility in race styles. Depending on the gate placement and the usage of one or two chutes, Keeneland can easily offer races from 4 1/2 furlongs long to a mile and five-eights. The chutes they use help add to the length possibilities. Keeneland Race Track, as a result, is a very dynamic race track. Their website has great graphics that list all the possible race combinations. One of the Keeneland's founders was Hal Price Headley. He is forever remembered, because the 4 1/2 furlongs course, The Headley Course, is named after him. Another of the Keeneland's founders is immortalized as well-Major Louie Beard. The Beard Course is just slightly over 7 furlongs in length. The names of these two great founders live on every day that there is horse racing on their namesake tracks. The grandstand is a great place to watch a race at Keeneland Race Track. Pretty much every race on the dirt track ends right in front of the grandstand. Talk about a way to watch a horse race. Your two eyes become the best seat in the house for a photo finish. The only race that does not end at the grandstand is the mile and sixteenth. Those races end right in front of the clubhouse. So the next time you are deciding where to take in the race at, look at what races are going to be run for the day and grab your spot accordingly. As mentioned, Keeneland Race Track also has a turf course. Those races range from 5 1/2 furlongs in length to a mile and five-eights in length. The course is named the Haggin Course. Just who is Haggin you ask? It's named after Mr. Louis Lee Haggin II, who served as president of Keeneland for fourteen years (1956-1970). After his retirement from being the president, Louis Lee Haggin II moved on to chair the board. It was the last job he had. In 1980, Louis Lee Haggin II passed away and his name lives on forever at Keeneland. One of the major events that take place at the Keeneland Race Track is the Toyota Blue Grass stakes race. The Toyota Blue Grass stakes race takes place in April - normally in the middle of the month and on a weekend. The Toyota Blue Grass stakes race has whopping $750,000 purse and the action is intense. It is a Grade I event that is open to three-year-olds only. The race is a one and one-eight mile long. It's not to be missed. The Toyota Blue Grass event is the major stakes race of the season at the Keeneland Race Track. Additionally, Bodog horse betting services offer a cash back program on all horse race wagering.
