Hoosier Park Facts:

Hoosier Park has been home to great harness and thoroughbred horse racing for over a decade now. In 1993, Churchill Downs Management Company was unanimously approved by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to be an investor in Hoosier Park. After some bumps in the road Hoosier Park finally opened in September of 1994. The historic night had a fan turnout of 7,633. The first night of racing at Hoosier Park had ten races on the card. Horse racing fans wagered $406,485 on that night. The next year, Hoosier Park introduced thoroughbred racing betting to local fans.

It was in 1995 that the Indiana Derby was introduced. That year, it was a $100,000-added race. The inaugural Indiana Derby was won by Peruvian. Hoosier Park has increased its status each year and it now holds many stakes races each season - 17 annually. Every year, local horse racing fans look forward to the Indiana Derby. The Indiana Derby is a Grade II race and the crown jewel at Hoosier Park. Another great stakes race at Hoosier Park is The Indiana Breeders' Cup Oaks, which is a Grade III race.

Unlike many horse racing tracks around the country, Hoosier Park has no turf course. All horse racing is conducted on their seven-eighths of a mile dirt oval. As mentioned, Hoosier Park is home to both thoroughbred and harness racing action. Millions of dollars has been spent on the construction of Hoosier Park and it was money well spent. Indiana can be proud of Hoosier Park. Churchill Downs Incorporated is known for their attention to detail and great horse racing facilities.
