It occupies almost 608 acres and has a 127,000 square foot grandstand, which can seat some 10,000 horse racing fans. The seating ranges from benches to luxury accommodations. The Grandstand has 95 horse betting stations and locations for smoking and non-smoking horse racing fans. It has 14 permanent barns with 900 stalls and one very large receiving barn with 150 stalls. The Colonial Downs is ready for horse racing action anytime. In length, the dirt track is second only to the Belmont Park Race Track The marquee event at the Colonial Downs is the Virginia Derby which is for three-year-olds and is a 1 and 1/4 mile long. Each year the Virginia Derby is run on the Secretariat Turf Course. It's run in mid-July and is a GR. III event. The Virginia Derby always features great horse racing action and the horses competing usually go on to win other stakes races - including Grade I wins. The Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs is not to be missed. In 2004, a new stakes race debuted at the Colonial Downs. The new race was the Virginia Oaks. The Virginia Oaks is a 1 and 1/8th mile horse race for three-year-old fillies. In 2004, the purse for this states race was set at $200,000. This stakes race is run on the Secretariat Turf Course. The Virginia Oaks stakes race is one of the three stakes races that merge to form the Colonial Downs' annual "Virginia Million" day. The first Virginia Oaks race in 2004 went to William E. Backer's Art Fan. Art Fan won the 2004 Virginia Oaks race in authoritative fashion. The Colonial Downs features both Thoroughbred racing and harness racing. Horse racing fans are treated to a wide variety of stakes races throughout the season. |
