Breeders' Cup

After the hoopla of the Triple Crown fades away into the distance, the horse racing year experiences one more jolt - the Breeders' Cup. The Breeders' Cup is the equivalent of the All Star game in other sports. It features the who's who and who's the best in horse racing.

The purse of the Breeders' Cup varies, but it is always multiple millions. As you might expect, this is a Grade I event. There's no room for error or let up here. 2007 marks an interesting year for the Breeders' Cup. It's traditionally been a one-day event, but that's changing. The Breeders' Cup will now span two days.

The Breeders' Cup is held at a different place each year, just like the All Star games in other sports. Churchill Downs has been a favorite spot for the Breeders' Cup. That track has hosted the Breeders' Cup in 1988, 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, and 2006. The 2007 Breeders' Cup will be held at Monmouth Racetrack and the 2008 Breeders' Cup will be held at the Santa Anita Park.

In 2007, there are 24 races from six tracks that will get horses into the event. Those races are held at: Saratoga Race Track, Arlington Park, Del Mar Racetrack, Belmont Park, Keeneland Race Track and Santa Anita.

The Breeders' Cup features many races - it's not just a one-race event like the Triple Crown races. In total, the purses from the various races are around $18 million. Each race has a purses of $2-$5 million, with $2 million being the average. The Classic is a 1 1/4th mile race on dirt for horses 3+ years old. The purse for the Classic is $5,000,000.

The Turf has a purse of $3,000,000. It's a turf race for horses 3+ years old. The Turf and the Classic are the two highest purse races during the Breeders' Cup, but every race is a must-see event.
