Beulah Park Facts:

Beulah Park was the first Thoroughbred racetrack in the state of Ohio. It was founded in 1923 and it is relatively historic - as horse racing tracks go. In fact, the famous Ohio State University was built just one year earlier. Horse racing in the state of Ohio has since expanded and now includes seven tracks in total - three thoroughbred and four harness. Today, exciting horse race wagering action takes place up and down the state. Beulah Park holds races most of the year, with the exception of June, July and August.

In the 1920's, greyhound racing was seen from time to time at Beulah Park. These occurrences were rare and eventually they disappeared, because greyhound racing in Ohio was illegal. In 1931, Ohio began regulating horse race betting via the pari-mutuel betting system. Like many horse racing tracks around the country, the Beulah Park had their share of historic events.

In 1983, the Beulah Park became the first track in Ohio to offer simulcast horse race wagering on the Kentucky Derby. It was in this year that a satellite receiving system was installed for the enjoyment of fans. The Triple Crown was not live to Ohio residents at the track. Last one night in 1984, the then owner removed all track records during a midnight raid. Later, the records were computerized, but that computer crashed in 1995 and now some records are lost forever.

1986 was a great year for Beulah Park. It had a new owner who was a horse racing enthusiast - Charles J. Ruma. He came up with a plan to renovate the park, which was estimated to cost $12 million. Tragedy struck the track in 1987 when the beloved horse, Glacial Princess, died. In the early 1990s, Glacial Princess was a two time Ohio Horse of the year winner. One fateful day, she broke down upon completing a three furlongs race. Glacial Princess's legacy lives on forever at Beulah Park. The horse was buried in the infield and a memorial was setup in its place. On that day, a window cashier took a bet from a bridge jumper for $34,000 on Glacial Princess. The bridge jumper lost everything and was never seen again.

In 1993, Beulah Park set Ohio horse racing history again by becoming the first racetrack to offer telephone betting on local and national races. It grew into a national level service. Recently, Beulah Park launched a new online horse betting system, Winticket.com. It features a quarter bet system which is a first in the United States. The future holds more innovations from Beulah Park and for the state of Ohio.
