Oregon Horse Racing

Horse racing has been a struggling industry in Oregon and Portland Meadows remains the only racetrack in the state. There is a small Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse breeding program in the state and the horses bred in Oregon typically race in Northern California and Washington as well. In addition to Portland Meadows, there is a fair circuit throughout the state that hosts a handful of live racing days.

Portland Meadows

Opened in 1946, Portland Meadows hosts both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing. Their season begins in October and runs through early February. The track highlights the breeding program in the state with Oregon Championship Day which is typically at the end of December – the day of racing showcases the Oregon-bred racehorses and offers stakes races and incentives to horses bred in state. The marquee event of the racing season is the Portland Mile which is generally scheduled for the end of January.

Fair Circuit

In 2016, there are a total of 23 days of live racing that are scheduled to be spread across five fair meets – the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, Grants Pass Downs, Crooked River Roundup, Tillamook County Fair and the Harney County Fair.
