Santa Anita Derby Favorites

Three horses are likely to take a lot of money in the Santa Anita Derby: Forbidden Kingdom, Messier, and Taiba. An impressive winner of the San Felipe last time out, Forbidden Kingdom proved his ability at two turns and also proved that he had far more early speed than Armagnac, a longshot who looks to be entered as a rabbit for Messier. He should prove tough to catch.

Though Messier will be vying with Forbidden Kingdom for favoritism, Taiba is the more interesting of the other two logical horses in this race. He cedes experience, stepping up from a debut maiden win to this Grade 1. But, he showed sprint speed in that outing, so should be able to keep the closest tabs on Forbidden Kingdom, and he has the pedigree to handle the stretch out.
