2021 Remington Springboard Mile Picks

The Kentucky Derby trail moves along to Remington Park on Friday, December 17 for the Remington Springboard Mile! Nine two-year-olds will line up to go a mile on the dirt, and the spoils are rich: $400,000 in purse money, as well as Road to the Kentucky Derby points (10-4-2-1) for the first four runners across the wire.

Contested since 2001, when it was called the Remington Park MEC Mile, the race has been called the Springboard since 2009. Since that time it has grown in importance as a prep for the rich three-year-old season. In 2012, the eventual three-year-old champion, Will Take Charge, contested this race — though he ran second to 128-1 shot Texas Bling.

Remington Springboard Mile Handicapping

Now that you have created your account with a trusted online sportsbook, you are ready to start handicapping the 2021 Remington Springboard Mile.

Remington Springboard Mile Favorites

#5 Classic Moment, for trainer Steve Asmussen, will probably go off favored. Asmussen has been strong in the Springboard Mile, with six victories, including two of the last three editions. He steps up from maiden company, but he was facing good horses at Churchill and he’s got the pedigree and the tactical speed to fit well in this spot.

It also stands out that jockey Stewart Elliott rides Classic Moment instead of sticking with stablemate #1 Concept. Concept is already a stakes winner over the course, but that was at one turn. He has never stretched out like this before and may have a tough time since he will be forced to send from the fence in a relatively large field.

Springboard Mile Contenders

#9 Osbourne has a strong shot for trainer Ron Moquette. His tactical speed from the outside gate could get him an excellent trip. Second off the layoff, he should be fit. Though he has yet to stretch out to two turns, his breeding should carry him a mile and then some. And, it is a strong positive that jockey Julien Leparoux hops on the plane to Oklahoma to stick with him.

There are a handful of runners with some speed. If they lock up early, it could set up for #3 Bye Bye Bobby, who comes in for last year’s winning trainer Todd Fincher. Bye Bye Bobby’s debut win only came at six furlongs, but it came in a stakes race against winners. Furthermore, he is bred extremely well for the stretch out, and can show that here.

The Underlay

#2 Make It Big, with Jose Ortiz riding, will certainly take money. But he has a lot to prove. He has some gaudy races against Florida-breds, though now he has to carry that form against open company. He will also have to prove himself away from Gulfstream, something a lot of horses who run well at Gulfstream cannot do.

Interesting Longshots

#6 Rowdy Rascal carries a three-win streak into the Springboard Mile. Those came against Oklahoma-breds, so this will be a tougher test against open foes. But, his pace versatility gives him a good chance to carve out a trip. He also has experience over this distance; he won over course and distance last time out and does not need a lot of improvement to figure in this.

#7 Rich Strike got his only win in a maiden claimer but proved he may be better than your average maiden thirty when finishing a troubled third in a two-turn allowance at Keeneland. All three of his races have come at two turns, allowing him to build fitness and experience, and can shine if the pace gets too hot early.
