Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping

Keep in mind that this race is a five-furlong race at one left-handed turn, over what is likely to be California firm ground. Turf sprint configurations and distances can vary widely. Though some horses can adapt to different distances and configurations well, it can always be a plus-point between horses of similar class and form to know who succeeds under these exact conditions.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Contenders

The likely favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is #3 Golden Pal. He won his final prep, the Woodford, getting headed in the upper stretch before jetting away to win impressively. His early speed will be a valuable asset. Though his foes will be tougher in this spot than last out, and he may be better at five and a half furlongs than at this flat five.

The best Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint bet is #4 Lieutenant Dan. He is fast enough to be involved from the outset, and will probably be stalking just off of Golden Pal. He is in his best form ever at this point, and he is a true aficionado of this five-furlong distance and of California firm turf. He should also be very fit turning back from a win down the Santa Anita hill.

#10 Gear Jockey has been successfully reinvented as a turf sprinter this year after running longer earlier in his career. He has never cut back to a flat five furlongs before, but he should relish the truly firm turf he will get in the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar. He has the pace versatility to make sure he doesn’t have too much to do late, and should be in good form off a freshening.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint International Contenders

#1 Glass Slippers became the first overseas runner to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last year, and returns for a repeat try. She can handle the cutback to five furlongs, but the rail post could make it difficult to get a good trip in such a big field. And, without as much early speed as usual in a turf sprint, she won’t get the best setup for her closing style.

The more interesting overseas runner is her stablemate #2 Emaraaty Ana. He won the six-furlong Sprint Cup (G1) at Haydock last out but is well proven at this shorter trip as well. He should be able to sit close to the pace in a race without a surfeit of speed, something that should mean a good trip for Emaraaty Ana.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Longshots

Though #12 Extravagant Kid was a well-beaten second in his final prep, he had a troubled trip in the Woodford and was making his first start since an international jaunt. He should be fitter and sharper this time around. With a good third in the King’s Stand (G1) last time he cut back to five furlongs, the distance suits him fine, and he is tactical enough to carve a trip from the outside.

For deeper exotic tickets like superfectas, consider #11 Fast Boat. He can run well at this short a distance, and consistently kicks on with his closing run. He probably will not have enough speed in front of him to win, but should be able to come on for a piece underneath even without a collapse on the front end.
