A Plus Tard In Great Form For Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1) is one of the most important and lucrative horse races for steeplechasers in the world! The 2022 edition is scheduled for Friday, March 18. A field of eleven top chasers will go three miles, two and a half furlongs for one of the most iconic prizes in British horse racing — and, a lucrative £625,000 purse.

The last two Cheltenham Gold Cup winners will try to add another trophy to their owner’s mantle. Al Boum Photo, trained by Willie Mullins, won the race in both 2019 and 2020. He finished third in 2021 behind Henry de Bromhead charge Minella Indo, who returns to try for his second Cheltenham Gold Cup. A Plus Tard, second in last year’s race for de Bromhead, also returns.

Will one of these horses shine in the feature race of the Cheltenham festival again?  Or, will a new face emerge among the best?  Keep reading, and learn!

Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites

A Plus Tard came close last year, finishing second to stablemate Minella Indo, but he should be able to turn the tables and take the crown this time. A Plus Tard gets Rachel Blackmore riding; no one has been riding major chasing festivals better than she has been lately, especially for runners from the Henry de Bromhead yard.

Though A Plus Tard fell short by a short head to Galvin on December 28 at Leopardstown, the ground should suit him a little better this time. Between that and the connections factor, that should be enough to flip that short margin into his favor, making A Plus Tard the horse to beat in the Gold Cup this year.

Among the returning champions, consider the consistent old man Al Boum Photo for the exotics. He is ten, and though horses who have hit the decade mark do not tend to win this race, they can still hit the board. Al Boum Photo can handle the ground and the distance, he won his usual prep again at Tramore, and he should be good enough for a piece of the underneath action.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Value and Exotic Horses

Price players have their hero in rising star Protektorat. At this point, the seven-year-old is unexposed in these sorts of races — he just tried a race more than three miles long last out, when he whipped 2018 Gold Cup winner Native River by 25 lengths on December 4. These younger foes should prove tougher, but Protektorat may have just found his best game.

Consider Tornado Flyer for the exotics as well.  The Willie Mullins trainee upset the King George VI (G1) at Kempton on December 26 over soft going, suggesting the ground condition at Cheltenham ought to suit. He also has shown some form over this course, running third in the shorter Ryanair Chase (G1) last year. He is in form, and could find a share under the leading lights.
