Hazel Park Raceway

Hazel Park Raceway was established as dual-breed facility in 1949. They hosted their first harness meet in the spring of 1953. The track was maintained as a dual-breed facility from 1949 through 1984. The track has been exclusive to Standardbred harness horse racing since 1985. Hazel Park was the first 5/8th of a mile horseracing track in the United States and holds the moniker of "The Pioneer Track".

Over the years Hazel Park has consistently attracted the top equines, their drivers and trainers from all over North America. On July 12, 1975 the Hazel Park track record for handle and attendance (at a live racing event) was set when 15,372 patrons wagered a total of $1,425,478.

On September 17, 1988 Hazel Park set for the record for the largest payout on a $2.00 wager at a harness track. A savvy horse bettor in attendance that day turned $2.00 into $1,243,053 with a "Super Twin" wager that predicted the exact order of the first four finishers in two consecutive races. The overall track records are 1:50.3 for the Pacing Gait was set by Aged Horse/Gelding "Yukon Cornelius" in 2007 and 1:54.3 for the Trotting Gait by 4-Year-Old Horse/Gelding "Homestretch" in 2008.

Hawthorne Race Course Chicago History

Over the years Hazel Park has hosted their fair share of major stakes races. Some of the more notable races include the Motor City Pace, the Red Rose Pace, the Nicole Hudock Memorial Pace and the William C. Connors Trot. The track has a speed rating of 2:00:3 and can accommodate nine starters in the gate.

The track width is 80 feet and homestretch length is 615 feet. The spacious clubhouse has a capacity of 3,000 while the grandstand capacity is 9,200 (additional seating is added for major events). Hazel Park has been recognized by the Detroit News as "Detroit's Best Action and Affordable Night" for good reason.

Food and drink are available daily in a number of venues in the new, state of the art, Grandstand Area. Tempt you taste buds or quench your thirst in the Top of the Park Grill, the Homestretch Bar or the Bridge Lounge. There is also a picnic area set in a casual park atmosphere. We love the "Dollar Day Fridays" when hot dogs and soft drinks are $1.00 and 16oz frosty draft beer is just $2.00 at the concession stand. If you have a group planning a night out you should seriously consider Hazel Park Raceway. They can accommodate social or business groups from 30 to 400 people. Their Club Plan or Winner's Circle Plan include a delicious smorgasbord buffet with unlimited options including Surf & Turf. Hazel Park Raceway enjoys lighting up the night and they do so with fireworks and concerts throughout the racing season.
